In Stanley Park across from the Vancouver Waterfront and the Olympic flame are a number of totem poles erected by the First Nations. This is the Thunderbird House Pole, a replica of a pole carved by Kwakwakawakw artist Charlie James in the early 1900s. The original is in the Vancouver museum. House poles were used in the cedar houses of the First Nations to support the roof beams. This pole has a thunderbird at the top and a grizzly holding a human below.

View Large Size on Black Another fun capture of the cirrus clouds from last weekend. When I excited the nature trail, I was greeted with this crazy awesome scene of cirrus clouds over the park. It was great to see them but at same time it was a subtle reminder the amazing weather we had all weekend was coming to and end with a major new rain front blowing in from the south west. My tripod was still setup with my telephoto on it from shooting the Owls on the nature trail so I elected to just shoot this bracketed HDR series hand held since it was bright enough to have fast enough shutter speeds. Photomatix did an awesome job aligning the images. I just had to mask some minor masking to do around the trees in Photoshop. I also used the ""Tone Map Twice" trick in Photomatix which really helps make the image pop. Photo 56 of 365 photo project. At first glance this house seems more like a bed and breakfast (without the outstanding service), than a regular house. There’s an odd assortment of permanent and temporary residents. You have Zoro, the surly pirate and swordsman that opened my box; Chopper, one of Zoro’s crewmates; the uglydolls, Jeero and Ox; two resident basenjis; and three (not sure if they’re tasty) humans. And these were just the ones I met within the first few minutes of arriving. Jeero and Ox were very curious about me. The little guy in the pink hat behind me is Chopper. Zoro says he’s a bit shy around new creatures.

I was having major procrastination issues today..haha I got up early and I didn’t even work out. I’ve been trying to do better with what I eat and trying to exercise a lot because I’m starting to pack on the pounds. I’ve been about the same size for the past couple of weeks but I would like to lose around 10 pounds because I feel rather chubby at times =/ But I like to eat so that’s a problem but I’m working on it. An Ogoh-Ogoh, monster created for the night before Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, Sanur, Bali, Indonesia 2006 ©BrianOMahony.net These colourful monsters, are created out of bamboo, paper and other natural materials found around the island. They are then painted in fabulous detail and wonderful rich colours. On the day before Nyepi the monsters are carried around the towns in carnival type parades, before they are burned to exorcise evil spirits. Supposedly these fabulous creations warn away the evil spirts in the night before Nyepi. When they return after midnight there is silence and no-one is heard or seen, so they dissappear until the following year! On Nyepi day itself, everyone has to stay in doors and be quiet. No lights, TVs and any other things that make a noise are banned for 24hrs. Youre not even allowed to speak, cos if the patrols hear or see anything they will throw stones at your windows! Its certainly a strange experience, which Ive had the pleasure of twice now. Nyepi is like no other festival in the world! I am not really happy with this work, mainly because it doesnt feel "finished". I have a different result in mind but my Photoshop skills are not sufficient to realize this. But despite all this, I still think its OK (at least for me-who never practices anything digital). I made the sketch on paper, scanned it in and then painted in Photoshop without using layers-the entire thing is on one layer. I looked at Blythe photos for referencing the face, but all the other things are purely made up. About the subject: I like all kinds of dolls and I think Blythes are quite expressive; therefor it was only natural to portray one. Enjoy!
