Much Better Viewed Large On Black Ive always been fascinated by the history of aviation, and the miracle of flight, and so enjoy taking photos of airplanes and helicopters, civil or military, old and new. After we visited the Grand Canyon, we found a small museum called "The Planes of Fame" at the intersection of US Highway 180 and State Route 64 in an area called Valle, Arizona (not a town, too small for that). (It is situated across from the Grand Canyon Airlines building.) I didnt go inside the museum itself this trip, but took some photos of the larger aircraft on display outside the museum. My favorite by far was this Lockheed Constellation - a C-69 U.S. Air Force version, most likely used for troop or VIP transport during World War 2. Ive always thought the "Connie" to be a beautiful aircraft, with its dolphin fuselage and triple tail. I hope you enjoy these photos of this historic aircraft of old. INFORMATION ON THE LOCKHEED CONSTELLATION: The Lockheed Constellation (Connie) was a four-engine propeller-driven airliner built by Lockheed between 1943 and 1958 at its Burbank, California, USA, facility. A total of 856 aircraft were produced in four models, all distinguished by a triple-tail design and dolphin-shaped fuselage. The Constellation was used as a civilian airliner and as a U.S. military air transport plane, seeing service in the Berlin Airlift. It was the presidential aircraft for U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Since 1937, Lockheed had been working on the L-044 Excalibur, a four-engine pressurized airliner. In 1939, Trans World Airlines, at the encouragement of major stockholder Howard Hughes, requested a 40-passenger transcontinental airliner with 3,500 mi (5,630 km) range - well beyond the capabilities of the Excalibur design. TWAs requirements led to the L-049 Constellation, designed by Lockheed engineers including Kelly Johnson and Hall Hibbard. The Constellations wing design was close to that of the P-38 Lightning, differing mostly in scale. The distinctive triple tail kept the aircrafts overall height low enough to fit in existing hangars, while new features included hydraulically-boosted controls and a thermal de-icing system used on wing and tail leading edges. The plane had a top speed of over 340 mph (547 km/h), a cruise speed of 300 mph (483 km/h), and a service ceiling of 24,000 ft (7,315 m). With the onset of World War II, the TWA aircraft entering production were converted to an order for C-69 Constellation military transport aircraft, with 202 aircraft intended for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The first prototype (civil registration NX25600) flew on January 9, 1943, a simple ferry hop from Burbank to Muroc Field for testing. The C-69 was mostly used as a high-speed, long-distance troop transport during the war.[7] 22 C-69s were completed before the end of hostilities, and not all of those entered military service. The USAAF cancelled the remainder of the order in 1945. After World War II, the Constellation soon came into its own as a popular, fast, civilian airliner. Aircraft already in production for the USAAF as C-69 transports were finished as civilian airliners, with TWA receiving the first on 1 October 1945. The first transatlantic proving flight departed Washington, DC on December 3, 1945, arriving in Paris on December 4, via Gander and Shannon. Trans World Airlines opened post-war commercial intercontinental air service on February 6, 1946, with a New York-Paris flight in a Constellation. On June 17, 1947, Pan American World Airways opened the first ever regularly-scheduled around-the-world service with their L749 Clipper America. The famous flight Pan Am 101 operated for over 40 years. As the first pressurized airliner in widespread use, the Constellation helped to usher in affordable and comfortable air travel. Sleek and powerful, Constellations set a number of records. On April 17, 1944, the second production L049, piloted by Howard Hughes and TWA president Jack Frye, flew from Burbank, California to Washington, D.C. in 6 hours and 57 minutes (c. 2,300 mi/3,701 km at an average 330.9 mph/532.5 km/h). On the return trip, the aircraft stopped at Wright Field to give Orville Wright his last plane flight, more than 40 years after his historic first flight. He commented that the Constellations wingspan was longer than the distance of his first flight. On September 29, 1957, a L1649A Starliner flew from Los Angeles to London in 18 hours and 32 minutes (approximately 5,420 mi/8,723 km at 292.4 mph/470.6 km/h). The L1649A holds the record for the longest-duration non-stop passenger flight — during TWAs inaugural London to San Francisco flight on October 1-2 1957, the aircraft stayed aloft for 23 hours and 19 minutes (approximately 5,350 mi/8,610 km at 229.4 mph/369.2 km/h). The advent of jet airliners, with the de Havilland Comet, Boeing 707, Douglas DC-8 and Convair 880, rendered the piston-engined Constellation obsolete. The first routes lost to jets were the long overseas routes, but Constellations continued to fly domestic routes. The last scheduled passenger flight of a four-engined piston-engined airliner in the United States was made by a TWA L749 on May 11, 1967 from Philadelphia to Kansas City, MO. However, Constellations remained in freight service for years to come, and were the mainstay of Eastern Airlines shuttle service between New York, Washington, and Boston until 1968. One of the reasons for the elegant appearance of the aircraft was the fuselage shape - a continuously variable profile with no two bulkheads the same shape. Unfortunately, this construction is very expensive and was replaced by the mostly tube-shape of modern airliners. The tube is more resistant to pressurization changes, cheaper to build. A large open bloom in shades of cinnamon, burnt pink, plum and metallic red-green. All the fabrics in this particular piece have a bit of a shine and reflect the light beautifully. The color changes a bit depending on the light, from deep red to burgundy and cinnamon. The bloom is attached to a hair comb and can be easily attached to any hairdo. All the petals can be manipulated, depending on your hairdo, you can spread them out and have a large open bloom (aprox. 7" wide) or pull one by one in and tuck in the flower into an up-do (5"-6" wide).

I passed a fallen tree that had been left, it had sprouted upwards from one point and further back behind the gate the sun was causing a really nice yellow glow. I pressed the button on the camera and thought that I would have a nice pic to look at. Nope, all I got was a flat colourless, grey old excuse for what my eyes had seen. I paid quite a bit to Mr Canon and Mr Sigma for my kit and wanted more. I remembered that I had paid Mr Adobe quite a lot of money too - so I unleashed some of his colour burn stuff on it. so when i was around 3 we lived next door to a wonderful old man, named Mr. Washington. She has an IV catheter in from the surgery. Shes going back to the vet tomorrow for the day so they can watch her, and she might need some more fluids. ------------- Hope had emergency surgery today to clear an intestinal obstruction, and she wound up getting spayed along in the bargain. She hadnt kept any food or water down for about 24 hours, and after a couple phone calls the vet recommended bringing her in. After a couple of xrays they found evidence of something stuck in her small intestine. After some deliberation we decided to send her in for surgery. Everything went well, and the fantastic vets were able to get her spayed as part of the same surgery. Shes home resting now and seems comfortable (thanks to pain meds). She happily ate some rice and soft kibble, along with her meds. Very glad to have her home!

She said, "Definitely the kiss one, mommy." When I was a little girl I *adored* Strawberry Shortcake ... I had every single doll, every record, every accessory - the works. Every Saturday my mama would have a "treasure hunt" for me when I woke up and waiting at the end many times was a new Strawberry Shortcake doll or goody. Now Im sharing my love of all the vintage Strawberry Shortcake dolls with my little girl. Its funny because we have always been a natural toys family - no plastics or junky toys (yeah, that doctor kit is super junky *and* plastic, it was from Nana ... but she loved it so much) - just woods, cloth and other more natural materials. However, I lose sight of that when it comes to the things I loved as a child and just had to share them with A. And she *adores* them! I have about 20 of the actual dolls up in the attic (still in their boxes too!) that Im going to give to her one by one via treasure hunt, of course. :) Oh, and we are totally boycotting any of the "updated" modern Strawberry Shortcake stuff ... why do they insist on taking a perfect thing and making it trampier for little girls??

Gisteren las ik dit artikel op de website van de New York Times over Bruce Jessen en Jim Mitchell, twee psychologen die aan de wieg stonden van de Amerikaanse ondervragingstechnieken na 9-11. En tot mijn verbazing stond bovenstaand artikel in De Volkskrant en het AD van vandaag! (Bijna) letterlijk gekopieerd en zonder bronvermelding. Mag dat zomaar??
