Bloomingdales, a chain of upscale American department stores owned by Macys, Inc., has 36 stores nationwide, with annual sales of $1.9 billion dollars. Bloomingdales started in 1861 when brothers Joseph and Lyman Bloomingdale started selling hoop-skirts in their Ladies Notions Shop on Manhattans Lower East Side. In 1872, Bloomingdales expanded and opened their East Side Bazaar, a harbinger of the modern "department store." In 1886, it moved to 59th Street and Lexington Avenue, still their flagship store, anticipating and capitalizing on the northern movement of New Yorks upper and middle classes. By 1929, Bloomingdales covered an entire city block. Two years later, the glamorous Art Deco edifice that still graces Lexington Avenue was completed. In 1949, Bloomingdales began its real expansion, opening its first satellite store in Fresh Meadows, Queens and by 1959, Bloomingdales had created a complete circle of stores around the flagship, in New Jersey, Westchester County and Long Island. This dramatic growth continued in the 70s and 80s with the opening of stores in the Northeast, Florida, and Chicago. Bloomingdales was on its way to becoming a true national entity. That vision culminated in November 1996 with the addition of its first four stores in California, the most ambitious expansion in the companys history. From the beginning, the Bloomingdales brothers catered to Americas love of international goods, and by the 1880s, their European selection was dazzling. A buying office in Paris in 1886 was the beginning of a network that now spans the globe. The 1960s brought promotions resulting from Bloomingdales fascination with the foreign market: the first was a small affair called "Casa Bella" featuring merchandise for the home from Italy. Over the next thirty years, the promotions took on a grand scale - including unique merchandise and cultural exhibits that would touch every department in Bloomingdales. Major transformation of the Bloomingdales image came in the 1960s and 70s. The promotions were so exciting that the term "Retailing as Theater" was coined to describe Bloomingdales "happenings." It was the era of pet rocks and glacial ice cubes, of visits by movie stars and royalty, from Elizabeth Taylor to Queen Elizabeth II. The new direction in merchandising was both to seek and to create. Buyers covered the globe to find exclusive, one-of-a-kind items. When they couldnt find what they wanted, they had it made. In fashion, Bloomingdales launched new designers and created boutiques for already-famous names. Among the discoveries: Ralph Lauren, Perry Ellis and Norma Kamali - and for the first time in America: Sonia Rykiel, Kenzo and Fendi ready-to-wear. Designers opening their first in-store boutiques at Bloomingdales include Yves St. Laurent, Calvin Klein, Claude Montana and Thierry Mugler. In 1961, Bloomingdales made retail history in yet another area by introducing the first designer shopping bag. Artist Joseph Kinigstein was commissioned to create a bag for the "Esprit de France" promotion. Rather than doing the obvious - ladylike flowers in pastel colors - he reproduced antique French tarot cards in bold red, black and white. Most daring of all, the bag omitted the store name. Even so, it was unmistakably Bloomingdales, and the collectors shopping bag was launched. Since then, Bloomingdales bags have been created by both famous and fledgling artists, architects and ad designers. Their designs have been featured in art museums all over the world. In 1971 "model rooms", a highlight of Bloomingdales since 1947, gained worldwide attention. "The Cave," an intricate multi-level frame sprayed entirely in white polyurethane, was a spectacular example of the lengths to which Bloomingdales would go to make a statement of style. Over the years, the model rooms have been showcases for the talents of everyone from architect Frank Gehry to filmmaker Federico Fellini. During the 1970s, Bloomingdales was a favorite stop of the international avant-garde, epitomized locally by the "Young East Sider" who lived right in the neighborhood. In 1973 the store wanted to stamp the Bloomingdales name on panties to launch an intimate apparel promotion, they chose the company nickname as a nod to the young, trendy crowd, and the "Bloomies" logo was born. Soon, New Yorkers were affectionately referring to the citys second most popular tourist attraction after the Statue of Liberty as "Bloomies" and the hottest souvenir in town was anything emblazoned with "Bloomies".

In the northern fishing town of Madridejos, the most revered santos is the Holy Body of Christ of the Locaylocay family. Carved in the early 1900s, the Santo Intierro is the centerpiece of Good Friday parade. It is customary for townsfolks to place their prayers, petitions, fish nets, books and any items they wished to be blessed inside the 15 foot 4-tier pagoda-like carroza during the procession. Part of the lore of the image is that once removed from storage, flies will hover over the image, especially over the wounds plugged with cotton. The flies actually flew over the image when we viewed it on Holy Thursday. The chemists in us- there are four of us there at that time- surmise of several explanations. Not that they matter to the people. at the ancestral Locaylocay house, Madridejos town, Bantayan island, Cebu, the Philippines (thanks to Sir Jimmy Locaylocay, the better half of Ma’am Joy, the former chairwoman of the USC Chem Dept) take a look of the other procession in Bantayan in colloidfarl.blogspot.com

The Phoenix Park at 707 hectares (1752 acres) is one of the largest enclosed recreational spaces within any European capital city. The Phoenix Park was established in 1662 by one of Ireland’s most illustrious viceroys, James Butler, Duke of Ormond, on behalf of King Charles II. Conceived as a Royal deer park, it originally included the demesne of Kilmainham Priory south of the River Liffey, but with the building of the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham, which commenced in 1680, the Park was reduced to its present size, all of which is now north of the river. Shortly after the Park’s acquisition it was enclosed within a stone wall, which was initially poorly constructed. Subsequent wall repair and new build were necessary as the Park’s size and boundaries were adjusted and realigned. In 1668, Marcus Trevor, Viscount Dungannon, was appointed Ranger who, with two other keepers, was responsible for the deer, managing the Park’s enclosures and newly formed plantations. About 30% of the Phoenix Park is covered by trees, which are mainly broadleaf parkland species such as oak, ash, lime, beech, sycamore and horsechestnut. A more ornamental selection of trees is grown in the various enclosures. A herd of Fallow Deer has lived in the Park since the 1660s when they were introduced by the Duke of Ormond. The Phoenix Park is a sanctuary for many mammals and birds and a wide range of wildlife habitats are to be found in the park. One such area is the Furry Glen, which is managed as a conservation area. One from a while ago now, you may remember other photos from this shoot. Featuring the beautiful Jem Armistead :) I absolutely loved this gate, and wish we wernt loosing light fast so I could have gotten many better photos. I meant to get this editted a while back but completely forgot, so when I was going through photos from old shoots today, I jumped at the chance. I am currently suffering from chickenpox :( Apparently, you can get it twice, and it is much worse in adults. Im all spotty, and been told I cant leave my apartment until at least Friday, as I am highly contagious. This could go one of two ways. Ill either get extremly bored and take loads of photos, or do nothing but moan, sleep and ache and take none!
