This a romance story, inspired by Karsh’s photographic art, between our father, Jack Newton and our Mother, Winsome Hooper. It took place before and during W.W.2. In the course of these tumultuous times they managed to discover each, the catalyst being a Karsh photograph of Winsome. The photograph was on display in Yousuf Karsh’s studio. It is a lovely story of attraction and love, inspired and initiated by a photograph. Our grandmother, Verna May Newton (Mimi) was very proud of her only child, Jack. Mimi saw a handsome, well accomplished and polished young man in his R.C.A.F. uniform. She arranged to have his photograph taken by Karsh, to be hung in her house for posterity and to initiate stories about her pride and joy. During the same time in Ottawa, a young beautiful woman (Winsome who had graduated from MacDonald College in St-Anne, had been chosen by Karsh as a model. Young, dapper Jack came into Karsh’s studio and was bowled over by the display photograph of Winsome, hanging on the wall. Jack was smitten and was instantly attracted and curious abut the young beauty, he had to find her! Charming Winsome, as she was called, while modeling, took a course in how to change a tire (somewhat unusual for these times). This story ended up in the local newspapers (no doubt seen by Jack!) She was an ambitious and bold role model for a young woman. Winsome’s father, Rowley Hooper, had emigrated from England for safekeeping. Winsome’s mother died young, Rowley remarried Lenora, who escorted the children coming from England and acted as their teacher while they were here. Jack’s father, Fred Newton along with Verna, assisted the Minett family in Place the Muskoka resort Cleveland House on the map. They built and ran the casino which brought music, dance, one-armed bandits and vacationing crowds which established Muskoka as the place to be. The resort is now part of Red Leaves, the resort that boasts the first J.W. Marriott hotel in Canada. Jacks’s plan at the age of 16 was to be an air traffic controller in California. On the bus to California he tried a one armed bandit at a bus station and won enough money to enroll and pay for flight school at the Boeing School of Aeronautics in California. What luck, for flying was his true passion! From there Jack become a top pilot for the R.C.A.F. flying special missions (flying Winston Churchill and other dignitaries). He also flew celebrities to filming locations (James Cagney, Ronald Coleman) and was in the movie Captain of the Clouds as a stunt flyer. Jack also taught flying in gander, Newfoundland and sources the site for a Comax airfield, Vancouver Island. The photo at Karsh’s studio of Winsome jumped out to him and grabbed him tightly. He had to meet this glamour gal to see if she was the one for him. He slyly arranged, through Karsh, to go to the same party as Winsome. At the party, Jack was introduced to Winsome and she took an immediate fancy to him. They continued to date and after some time Jack’s intuition proved true. They fell in love and adored each other. Their yearning for each other led to their marriage on Sept. 9 1941, Jack’s 23rd birthday. Their four fortunate children witnessed their love and deep affection for each other and also experienced the power and the dreams that Karsh’s art inspired and the love story that was initiated. This story of Karsh and Our parents will stay alive from one generation to the next, entertaining and magical. On February 9, 1960, Joanne Woodward became the first actress to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! When looking through her film titles, I found The Three Faces of Eve, for which Ms. Woodward won the 1957 Best Actress Oscar. I had never seen the film, but watched it last night on Netflix (you can watch it instantly). Its a true story about a young woman who is diagnosed with multiple personality disorder. When I was 8 months pregnant, Susie got out one night. We went searching for her for hours and she was no where to be found. Poor Matt, he comforted his beyond pregnant wife as she sobbed uncontrollably about how she wasnt ready to be a mother since she couldnt even take care of her kitty. Needless to say, Susie Q wandered back home around 5am the next morning. I left my window cracked on the off chance she found her way home... and she did. Hopped right up on the window seal and meowed until I woke up. That very next day, we went and bought her a name tag. So, if it ever happens again, Ill be able to breath a little easier.

Jesse and I went to hear his favourite author, Lisa Moore, read from her new novel February. The strange career of "Johnny Apollo" at the Roxy is one that could only have been born in the brain of a busy screen writer, who reads only the headlines in the newspapers, but for some odd reason the way it works out on celluloid is surprisingly pat. For, after all, why shouldnt a millionaire college boy, a popular stroke, or something, for one of the great universities, be able to hold his own in the underworld where (to paraphase a British poet) "there aint no bloomin code, and a man can use a little class on the side"? The spectacle of Tyrone Power turning gangster for philosophical reasons (he is the son of a convicted Wall Street broker whose fashionable friends forsake him) will be a familiar one to those who saw "Jesse James," in which he took up highway robbery through opposition to that industrial octopus, the railroad. Certainly there is no denying that Mr. Zanuck and his auctorial and directoral cohorts have taken this perhaps at first blush unpromising idea and turned it into a crackling melodrama, in which the only slow moments arrive when Dorothy Lamour sings sad songs in a get-up which demi-mondaines discarded back in the Seventies. Otherwise it is one prolonged symphony of socks in the jaw, subpoenas in night clubs, jail breaks and one flash of a penitentiary newspaper with a gossip column heading which we shall never forget: "Stir-Tistics." The man responsible for this happy journalistic invention must also have had a hand in the screen play, which abounds with cute twists and modernized devices for making an ancient melodrama palatable. And when the invention fails there is toujours Lamour. The picture has other virtues than its productional importance, virtures which include a welcome stream-lined prison set. Primarily, we should list the excellent journeyman direction of Henry Hathaway; the acting of Mr. Power, who maintains a nice balance between Harvard and the Tenderloin, and a felicitous stroke of casting which has placed Edward Arnold, the tergiversating tycoon, and Lionel Atwill, his strictly Groton lawyer, opposite each other in a duel of commanding presences. Lloyd Nolan is the mobster with whom Tyrone decides to tie up, after he leaves school, in a snobbish huff at the sources of his fathers wealth, and Charley Grapewin, a really learned gentleman, with a taste for Shakespeare and law books as well as for Scotch comically mixed with milk, is refreshingly novel as the criminal mouthpiece. Tombstone became famous when prospector Ed Schieffelin discovered silver in the nearby hills in 1877. It further made a claim to fame when a certain gunfight broke out at the O.K. Corral involving Wyatt Earp and a dentist turned gunslinger named John Henry "Doc" Holliday. Today Tombstone is no longer inundated with gunslingers and prospectors but with tourists. Yet you can still encounter the dusty streets, wooden sidewalks and rowdy saloons that remind visitors of once upon a time in the West. Heres another one on a nice black background. Heres a recent photo of my small Colorado blue spruce after wiring it with Colin Lewis on Friday. One more year of development (or so) and itll be ready for a bonsai pot. This is the second wiring of this tree since the real styling began. Here is the tree in April after the first wiring. The wire was removed as the spring growth swelled the branches. This wire will remain on until early summer.
