scorpions (#32) [wip]A friend of a friend called me up asking "for the sign of scorpio with three scorpions making it." I laughed and then realized he wanted three scorpions in the shape of the astrological sign of scorpio.

I spent some time studying and sketching scorpions. I looked at technical diagrams, photographs and tattoos of scorpions. They are some really weird creatures, and are quite complicated in structure.

I finally settled on this stylized sketch that was a blend of toony and menacing. The morning before the appointment, I tweaqued some bits that were still bothering me and everyone is pleased with the sketch.

The tattoo session started off a little challenging. The client was sitting up in a chair, but talking to their friends and moving around some. At some point, we decided to bust out the massage table and that helped the session a lot.

Another thing that I did differently today is I started the session by riding the tube. It allowed me to fall into the groove without having to worry about needle depth. I was able to follow the lines well enough, and since it was a drawing that I did I know the places where the accuracy mattered and where it is allowed to be looser. At some point, I re-adjusted my machine to ride the needle because I found that I actually have far better accuracy and line quality this way. Im getting much better at judging needle depth, and this is making me happy.

The first part of the session was the initial line work. It was looser and followed the feel of the original illustration. Since I did it in amore relaxed style, it had its share of imperfections. But this didnt matter because my intention was to go over all of the lines a second time to stylize the illustration more. This allowed me to smooth the crooked bits and deepen the shallow parts. This step took considerably longer than I had anticipated, but I am pleased with the results.

Weve decided to call it quits after the line work and have a second session for shading and coloring. I actually like breaking sessions up like this because it gives the skin a chance to heal, and it heals much faster this way. It also allows me to see the linework on the body and have longer to contemplate other design choices that are difficult when there is no direct client meeting to discus the project.

This was a good follow-up to the previous session that had some challenging parts to it. Im still learning more about lining and how to control the machine and draw better lines. There is no question that at this point what I could benefit the most from is to do as many linework tattoos as possible. Ill most likely start up tattooing pigskin quite often (ewww) just to build up these skills. I have the fundamentals down, now its a matter of refining my skills.

356.365 Congrats Mery and Pato!Pato and Daniels cousin Mery had their civil wedding ceremony today. In Argentina, a couple is officially married through a civil wedding ceremony that takes place first. Then, if the couple so chooses, they may have a church wedding afterward (sometimes later the same day as the civil ceremony or a day or two later).

This photo was taken at the mini-reception and toast that took place after the civil ceremony. The church wedding and reception will be on Saturday night.

Education making global issues relevantMike Foster, International Development Minister with Lucy McKinty and Kieran Hamilton, pictured at St Josephs College in Belfast.

Mike Foster said:

"The Global School Partnership is a great way for children to learn more about the world they live in and the issues affecting their future. Today I saw at first hand how education links between schools throughout the world make global issues relevant and interesting for young people. Now we want more schools to join up and become global citizens by bringing the world into their classroom."

fall wardrobe number 1.ive been getting a bit chilly in the studio these days. temps were in the 40s this a.m. and we have yet to turn on the heat, so it seems it is time to layer up. i thought id start with something simple and fall like. not quite full on wrap me up in felt winter quite yet. here is my first effort to clothe myself. once upon on time these materials were vintage buttons stashed in an old womans closet in winnetka, yarn hanging in the back of my grannys closet, and an extra large fellows plum and heather brown merino wool sweaters. now they are one, my sweet plum fall tunic.

Monkees StuffMy meeger Monkees collection. The Headquarters album in the back is autographed by Micky Dolenz, as well as the picture hanging on the wall. Since this pic was taken, I also added the second season of the shows and got both versions of the live concert in Anaheim DVD. Not to mention I have numerous copies of all the Monkees albums in Vinyl, the new CD releases from Rhino, with all the extras on them, and some assorted Monkees buttons. OH...and two books, Whos got the Button and Monkees Go Mod. I am a 51 year old male who drives my wife nuts with my love for the Monkees. I have always admired these guys for taking a situation they got stuck with and making it work as a real group. Not to mention their steadfastness at keeping the Monkees alive.

You Still Take Me By Surprise. 14/365"Falling a thousand feet per second
You still take me by surprise
I just know we can’t be over
I can see it in your eyes
Making every kind of silence takes a lot to realize
It is worse to finish then to start all over and never let it lye
And as long as I can feel you holding on
I won’t fall even if you said I was wrong"
