The Eiffel Tower is a 19th century iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. I took these photos on 6 March 2010 at the ceremonial start of the Iditarod dog sled race. The real start is from Willow. The Iditarod is known as "the last great race". It goes 1,100 miles from Willow to Nome through unforgiving terrain and downright nasty weather. I took these photos between Goose Lake and APU. What a great day to be an Alaskan!

The River Trent is historically one of Englands major trading rivers. It rises in the Staffordshire hills near Stoke-on-Trent, flows through Burton-on-Trent, Shardlow, (where it becomes navigable), Nottingham, Newark, passes the point this shot was taken from and on through Gainsborough and so to Trent Falls where it joins the River Humber. The Romans (who called it the Trisantona) recognised the value of the river as a route from the sea to the centre of England, years later the Trent acted as an easy route for Viking invaders to attack Nottingham. On this reach, which forms the border between Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, the Trent is tidal and its level is quite high in this shot but on the ebb and flowing fast. The calm water in the foreground is the sheltered junction with the Fossdyke at Torksey Lock. Ive placed the shot in my Lincolnshire set as it was taken from the Lincolnshire bank although a lot of what can be seen is in Nottinghamshire.

You know I get annoyed at lots of things. Im a grumpy old woman; its what I do. Anyway, THIS is another of those things that get me fuming. Cars that ignore red lights and think that just one more going through wont matter. Allow me to explain these roadworks. The road on the corner where that car is passing is being worked on and theres a barrier closing the lane there - it extends probably another 50 feet beyond where you can see. Now if you look at the lights, you can see they are already turning to green (the sequence for you non-drivers or people who think traffic lights dont apply to them, and therefore dont need to be known about, is red alone, red and amber together, then green alone). The lights will be on green before that car has moved another couple of feet. The lights are also set to turn red at one end with a sufficient pause before starting to turn green at the other. Therefore, I know that the driver of the red car went through his lights long after they had turned red. Which means I have to wait after MY lights have turned green ... Selfish! *end of rant*
