Jessie Turner Skate ParkThe Jesse Turner Community Center Skate Park includes a large plaza and three bowls separated by raised planters. This is the second skatepark for the City of Fontana. Skate park designer Colby Carter and Site Design Group worked with professional skateboarders Lance Mountain and Steve “Salba” Alba on the 2-individual bowl designs. The Peanut shaped bowl and Roman bowl both have custom Golden State Pool Coping and Tile that was designed and engineered for skatepark use. The flow course has extensions, an escalator, an over vert pocket, a 16’ capsule with a rock stamped pattern on the outside and a roll-in that sends you right in to the capsule. This is the first bowl in Southern California to incorporate a capsule. The plaza comprises most of the skatepark. It serves as a multi-use area which includes raised planters, ledges, stairs, hubbas, handrails, manual pads, and a step-up.

Toronto City Hall, Canada3-exposure HDR using Photomatix with curves adjustment in Photoshop. Taken from my hotel room while in beautiful Toronto on a business trip.

The City Hall of Toronto, Ontario, Canada is one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city. Designed by Finnish architect Viljo Revell (with Heikki Castrén, Bengt Lundsten, Seppo Valjus), landscape architect Richard Strong, and engineered by Hannskarl Bandel, the building opened in 1965; its modernist architecture still impresses today. It was built to replace Old City Hall, which was built in 1899.

The building is on a large site on the north side of Queen Street West between Bay Street and Osgoode Hall. The address is 100 Queen Street West, and its postal code is M5H 2N2. It is on the site of the Ward, which was a major immigrant reception area during the first half of the twentieth century, characterized by its slums, as well as Torontos first Chinatown after the Second World War. The population of the large area was displaced, mostly to the northwest of the site. Much of the Chinese population residing in the district had to be relocated before construction of the new City Hall could begin.
A few streets were cut off, namely Elizabeth and Chestnut Streets at Queen Street.

"United We Conquer", Commando MemorialCommando memorial at Spean Bridge, Scotland.

"In Memory of the Officers and men of the Commandos who died in the Second World War 1939 - 1945. This Country was their Training Ground."

There is a bigger plaque on the back of the statue which reads:

THE COMMANDOS 1940-45

In the summer of 1940 when Britains fortunes in World War II were at their lowest ebb and an enemy invasion was threatened Winston Churchill boldly ordered the raising of an elite force to raid the enemy-held coastline of Europe and regain the initiative.

The new units, which initially consisted of volunteers from the regiments and corps of the British Army, were called Commandos.

Within weeks they were in action in Europe, later in the Middle East and the Far East. During the next five years they fought in every theatre of war with such success that the word Commando became feared by the enemy yet respected by friendly forces.

In 1942 the Commando Basic Training Centre was established in the Scottish Highlands at Achnacarry. There potential Commando soldiers (who by then came from no only the British Army but also the Royal Marines and the Allied Armies) underwent their tough and purposeful training. Only those who successfully completed all the course were accepted and privileged to wear the famous Green Beret. This distinctive head-dress was acknowledged as the hallmark of the highest standards of military training, self-discipline, physical endurance, initiative, bravery and courage, whilst under their simple motto "United We Conquer" a comradship beyond literary description was born, fostered, and flourished.

For their valour in action the Commandos earned thirty-eight battle honours and many awards including eight Victoria Crosses, but many made the supreme sacrifice, no fewer than 1,700 Commando soldiers lost their lives and others were seriously wounded. It was a record that prompted Winston Churchill to pay the following tribute to the Commandos: "We may feel sure that nothing of which we have any knowledge or record has ever been done by mortal men which surpasses their feats of arms. Truly we may say of them when shall their glory fade.

This plaque was unveiled on the occasion of the Freedom of Lochaber being conferred on the Commando Association on the 18th November 1993.

Mamie the YankThis day in 1990 my grandmother died. As I said before, she led a life of adventure and we only know small pieces. In the mid-1960s she was in New York looking for work. A friend of hers told her of a job she had applied for, but had felt too intimidated to take, working as a cook for a wealthy family. They wanted a cook who could cook EVERYTHING. So Mamie headed to the book store, bought the biggest cookbook she could find, and applied for the job. She had only one night before the interview to swat off the recipes, and the next day she got the job, cooking for Peter Lawford and his wife Patricia Kennedy-Lawford. And here you can see the cheeky imp herself, in a newspaper article dated May 19th, 1977. Like all the best cooks she liked to eat too, so if she thought it tasted right, thats what she served. Apparently they were easy to cook for too. This is one of the collection of souvenirs she kept in a special suitcase of memmentos and correspondences. I cant remember a lot, but she had a talking teddy bear Teddy Kennedy from one of his campaigns, and she was serving the whole family dinner, extended etc., when the news came that Robert Kennedy had been shot.

This was actually a birthday cake being delivered to Mamie.
