- Elizabeth Lawrence Hallelujah! Im feeling better today! I mean, dont get me wrong, Im still sick. But not the crippling, forced to do nothing but stay in bed all day kind of sick. I actually got in for my first day of work at my new job today. I didnt stay long, but then neither did my new boss. And I was there long enough to pick up some files and my new laptop and bring those home so that I can avoid the drive and work from home for the rest of the week and keep getting over this stupid flu or cold or whatever it is. So with my newfound freedom,I decided to do some outdoor shots today at the park near my parents house. Gallup Park is simply gorgeous. I grew up walking and riding my bike down to this park all the time. There were some folks eating lunch in their cars and watching me take these pictures, and a guy doing a lunchtime walk on the path even asked if I wanted him to take the picture for me instead of running into place on the ten second timer. It was pretty funny. So not only am I watching the Tigers - Twins playoff game tonight (Go Tigers!), but I was also super excited to get a call from Anna and have an awesome chat with her. Shes sick too (feel better, snatch!) so she understands the stir crazy locked in feeling as much as I do. And she has the cutest southern accent, even though shes all snuffly right now. :) Thanks for the laughs, Anna! I had a few shots that I liked from the park, so Ill post the others in the comments. I went over to a friends house to try and get some shots of her Kitty, Sinbad. Sinbad is a former "grain elevator" cat but took quite a liking my friends home and ended up making his way inside. More plainly put, hes a rescue. Anyway, I took a LOT of photos and this was about the only one that came out post worthy. He has a cute little black face and I forgot my flash. Exhibition at the United States Botanic Garden from February 6– April 11, 2010. The United States Botanic Garden is rooted in the nation’s heritage. During the late 18th century, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison shared the dream of a national botanic garden and were instrumental in establishing one on the National Mall in 1820. The institution actually traces its beginning to 1816, when the constitution of the Columbian Institute for the Promotion of Arts and Sciences in Washington, D.C., proposed the creation of a botanic garden to collect, grow, and distribute plants of this and other countries that might contribute to the welfare of the American people. The Institutes garden was established by Congress in 1820 to the west of the Capitol Grounds, from First Street to Third Street between Pennsylvania and Maryland Avenues. This facility functioned until shortly after the organization stopped holding meetings in 1837. In 1842, the idea of a national botanic garden was reestablished when the United States Exploring Expedition to the South Seas (the Wilkes Expedition) brought to Washington a collection of living plants from around the globe. Initially placed in a specially constructed greenhouse behind the Old Patent Office Building, the plants were moved in late 1850 into a new structure on the site previously occupied by the Columbian Institutes garden. In continuous operation and open to the public since 1850, the Botanic Garden moved to its present location in 1933, a complex located along the north and south sides of Independence Avenue bordered by First Street and Third Streets, S.W. The Garden includes the Conservatory; the National Garden, which opened in 2006; and Bartholdi Park, which was created in 1932. A plant production and support facility opened in Anacostia in 1993 includes greenhouse bays and maintenance shops. The U.S. Botanic Garden was formally placed under the jurisdiction of the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress in 1856 and has been administered through the Office of the Architect of the Capitol since 1934. The Architect of the Capitol has served as Acting Director of the United States Botanic Garden and is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Garden and for any construction, changes, or improvements made. Mr Completely Bonkers Racoon would, due to his unhinged disposition, do the least logical thing. In this case that would be to point the banana at Mrs PB. Mrs PB, who does not get on well with the professor, exasperated by the yellow fruit pointing in her general direction, would undoubtably retaliate by aiming her rolling pin squarely at the moronic racoons head. Mr Fox meanwhile, free from this loop of mutually assured racoon destruction, would be free to assist his polar bear. To make the stalemate slightly less unfair, not that anyones a match for Mrs PB, Mr Fox was therefore given the night off!

Actually I found this thumb-sized beetle floating in Crystal Creek so I lifted him out of the water and placed him on my kayak mostly to terrify my wife Margo. Mission accomplished! I paddled up next to her and bumped into her boat with this giant crawling around on my prow and she FREAKED! He had some chompers on him - I believe they eat wood. When irritated he would start biting everything in sight. I let him ride all the way back and didnt know where he had gone until I lifted the kayak to put it on my truck top and he fell off to the ground with a thud.

Saturday I spend the afternoon and part of the night at the hospital, like I said in my last upload. I want to thank all those who wished a speedy recovery, it was indeed speedy. Mr. Dimas, who is a serious yet easygoing man of 57, entered the hospital with symptons of brain hemorrhagic stroke. He didnt recognize people, felt his limbs numb, and was "tripping" as if he were on drugs. saturday night, after all test results came back (brain scan, electroencephalogram, blood tests, kidney, liver, lungs, etc) the doctors were puzzled, because everything was "normal". They made a toxicologic exam, for what they first suspected was a lidocaine intoxication. It turned out to be a belladonna intoxication/poisoning. Lidocaine, xilocaine and belladonna are components (and are painkillers) of a cream he uses on his skin. It happens he was bleeding and he used WAY too much of the cream. if you are interested, you can read more about Atropa belladonna here. Belladonna is known to be a powerful poison, as well as a powerful medicine, it all depends on dosage. It can cause bizarre hallucinations. Saturday night, we were told that sunday morning hed be sent to a normal room, and sunday night he would be sent home. Sunday morning there was a baptism cerimony for Naianes daughter and barbecue party in the afternoon, and I was asked to take photos of both, but most of the people who stayed until late at the hospital just couldnt go to the cerimony in the morning. I went in the afternoon, took many photos and it was good to see everyone in high spirits, and even making fun of the situation. Mr. Dimas is safe back home now, but he doesnt remember anything of what happened. ~~~~~~~~ this photo is somewhat inspired by the movie "Atonement". It has little to do with the movie, but I kind of had it in mind when I took it.
